It has a clear glass on top and the bottom is a cobalt blue. There is a contemporary design with indented circles around the piece. Inside there are beautiful flowers in lovely shades – like a resin type of material. It has a marking on the front bottom as you see in photo. 1 3/4 tall and in nice pre owned condition – a few tiny scuffs, etc. Would look great on any desk. The item “Vintage Signed J. P. Superb Peter Raos 1998 Blown Art Glass Millefiori Monet Water Lilies Paperweight
Description: Masterfully executed large, complex paperweight made by the renowned New Zealand glass artist Peter Raos in 1998. This includes lampwork waterlilies and lily pads of delicate millefiori canes. Signed’Raos 1998 New Zealand’ around the base edge. The interior glass is a striking aqua blue. There is also rich emerald green glitter cane glass banded throughout which makes this an incredibly rich piece to stare at! Height 3 1/4 inch, domed. C ondition : Perfect; no chips, bruises, or scratches. Lightly off axis (I turned the paperweight to the angle where you can see the slight lean in two photos: photo #2 and the very last/final photo) this can be positioned so that this is a non-issue. I have one other amazing Raos piece up right now so please take a look. About the artist (by the artist). In some of my recent work I used the idea of the garden/moon gate as a metaphor to represent our conscious mind- our need to create ideas of beauty and a new sense of order/ composition. I wanted the form of the paperweight to reflect the circular view as if one is entering a Chinese garden through a curved stone moon gate, framing the view. I liked the idea of linking strong complementary colours such as yellow and blue into the composition. The combination of yellow and blue is unusual and reminds me of van Gogh I think there is a strong emotional energy between these colours. I used this dynamic relationship to express the emotional feeling you get as you enter the garden and discover almost instantaneously a cloud of blossoms and you experience through your garden the mysterious connection you have with nature especially the change in seasons. At that exact moment, nothing else exists except for the sea of wisteria blossoms and the sky- you become absolutely aware of the season before it changes. You know the blossoms will fall to the ground and new leaves will emerge – your attention shifts to another vista- the moment is over. I think there is a strong connection between gardens and art: part of the established function of art is to organize reality, impose a new order on experience and in the process of raising it to a higher level of significance, creating beauty. Gardens are emblematic of our conscious mind and our desire to understand ourselves, our need to create ideas of beauty and a new sense of order / composition. I wanted to create an impression of an idealized, constructed garden by linking colour and technique. I used a white background to create perspective and highlight transparent colours especially concentrated in the Millefiori. I repeated blocks of colour around the piece to set up a rhythm in the composition. Flowers are essentially symbolic of life and reproduction and we normally associate reproduction with warmth. I find it an interesting idea to associate flowers with cold light; nature is not limited to human parameters, it allows the most delicate flower to bloom and reproduce in a wide range of temperatures. There is such a juxtaposition of forces and from it comes life. With over 35 years of full time practice I keep returning to the themes of life and how we reconcile our place in nature. It is paradoxical for me when writing about my work because one attempts to be speak rationally to describe things that are irrational, emotional and transient. Rare Engraved Millville Umbrella Paperweight Inkwell
Glass Millville NJ South Jersey Umbrella Engraved Inkwell Paperweight Circa 1890 Nearly 9 3/4 high with lid A polished pontil Beautifully engraved with the name Annabelle A wonderfully formed umbrella with extremely pleasant multicolored chips of glass. The dominant colors are a striking combination of blues, that stand out amid a variety of the contrasting colors. I’ve only seen other engraved examples at the American Museum of Glass in Millville, NJ. My research has uncovered the fact that Whittall Tatum engraved varying peices for girls that were celebrating their 16th birthdays. This inkwell came out of a 50 year old Gloucester County, New Jersey collection. Another rare aspect is that the bottle in the center portion of the weight has been manipulated into a tapered form. Which is not typical! Being wider at the shoulders and tapering gradually toward the top of the lower weight. Which makes it clearly stand out amongst other inkwell paperweights. For accuracy I mention the minute pinhead sized, shallow nip off the top edge of the bottles lip. It can barely be seen. Also for accuracy, a BB sized slightly rough, but clear spot in the side of the weight. I’ve seen these markings on glass occasionally before and I have concluded that it is either another hot piece in the lehr briefly coming into contact with it or a droplet of water or sweat. It is definitely not a bruise. There is some typical flaking and bruising at the very bottom edges of the ground stopper base which are shown in the pics. They can easily be ground and polished if desired. Personally, I wouldn’t bother. The inner neck of the bottle is also ground and does not reveal the stoppers flakes while inserted. In other words it displays beautifully. This peice has everything going for it! Rarity of engraving, beautiful colors and a highly unusual and pleasing form. (Circa Pre 1900) It has Truly Gorgeous Colors on this Umbrella and much better when seen in person. On the Globe Portion I only see 2 tiny flea bites. And a few light scratches. One of the scratches is about 2 inches long but starts and stops a few times during the length of the 2 inches. The few scratches are so fine I could not get a picture. I see a tiny flea bite on the lip of the shot glass and a small ding on the lip as well and I marked both of those items I just mention with Black arrows on picture number 4. It shows heavy shelf ware on the Pontil bottom and this Dazzling SHOT GLASS Measures 3 1/4″ Diameter by 5 1/2″ Tall and weights just over 2 pounds by itself. These Antique Shot Glasses with Rainbow Umbrella are VERY RARE. I have only seen 2 of them and presently I own both of them. I consider Beautiful SHOT GLASS to be a Very Good Display Piece.
