The millefiori canes are set in clear glass, and include pairs of white edelweiss canes in the outer ring. Small speck of cullet in the clear glass below the level of the canes – see images. Concave polished base with wear ring. Size : diameter 2 3/16 inch / 56 mm; height 1 5/8 inch / 41 mm. C ondition : very good; no chips, bruises, or scratches other than a couple of tiny marks on the base. This weight is a ten petaled red flower by Paul Ysart. The flower is set on a green stem, with three leaves coming from the stem. There is an authentic “PY” signature cane underneath the bottom leaf next to the stem. The base is a stave basket comprised of complex canes; a pale green cross in the center, surrounded by a white cog, surrounded by a royal blue circle. There is a ring of controlled bubbles delicately placed at the inside junction of each pair of staves. The weight is 2.8″ in diameter and 2.1″ tall. The base is fire polished, but there is a rough pontil mark in the depressed center. The weight is in perfect condition. The glass is very clear. The “PY” signature cane was used throughout Ysart’s career from well before 1940 through the 1960s. After 1955, when Paul Jokelson began distributing Ysart’s weights in the United States, the “PY” cane was almost exclusively used for the American imports. This is a stunning weight. Unfortunately, I had a really tough time photographing it, and I’m afraid that the images do not truly capture its beauty. The front image was taken with a flash to control reflections. The two oblique views are one with flash and one without. The back, side, and signature images are all taken without flash. Hopefully, between them, they accurately convey how attractive the weight is in person. His fater Salvador emigrated from Spain to France in 1905 to work in the glass industry there. In 1916 they moved again, to Glasgow, Scotland, and then finally ended up in Perth in 1922. By that time Paul and his brothers, Augustine, Vincent, and Antoine were all accomplished glass makers. Paperpooba Collectibles and More! This is a must have for any true collector of Studio Art Glass Paperweights. Gary Scrutton was the creator of Parabelle glass and soon became recognized as one of the finest makers of Millefiori paperweights in the world. His goal was to achieve the same or better quality than the antique glass makers from the famous French houses. Two of Gary’s signature canes became the Pansy and Clichy style rose. This paperweight is a massive 3 1/4 in diameter and contains a massive center pinkk rose surrounded by 10 smaller yellow roses. They are in turn surrounded by 16 pink roses which are surrounded by 18 red roses. Each of these Clichy style roses are framed in aventurine green leaves. The entire motif is sitting in a white stave basket which is not very common on Parabelle paperweights. This was later in the Gary’s career when is was already recognized as one of the leading paperweight makers in the world. The paperweight is signed “Parabelle Glass Artist Proof 1998″. The paperweight is striking in person! My photographs do not do it justice. The bright spots you see in my photos are reflections of the overhead lights. The weight is problem free with no chips or bruises. If you are considering this paperweight I would not wait too long as it will probably sell fairly quickly.
