His works are so realistic that people often wonder if theyre looking at real jellyfish preserved in glass. In the late 1980s, the artist was inspired after a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where he looked at pacific coast jellyfish as if he was viewing art inside a gallery. This got him thinking. He knew right then that he needed to capture the beauty of jellyfish in glass. Offering this striking antique Tiffany Studios favrile scarab. It has a bronze surround with a braided rope design that fits snugly into a matching base. There is a semicircular notch on one side and a filled one on the other indicative of where the scarab would have been attached to the lamp. There is also a tight hairline across the center as shown. The underside of the base is stamped Tiffany Studios with a model number of 455. I have only seen that number associated with Tiffany lamp parts, so it was likely another salvaged piece married to the scarab by a talented craftsman. There is patina and wear to the base as shown. As you can see, the piece displays very handsomely. Measures about 6.25″ x 4.75″ across the bottom. By Peter von Brackel, pp. 129, 178-179, I estimate it’s manufactured at the beginning of the 20th century, most probably in Janstein or Inwald glassworks. Diameter ca 105mm (ca 4″), height ca 41mm (ca 1 5/8″). Excellent original condition with subtle signs of wear adequate to the age of this paperweight.
