Charles Kaziun Jr PANSY Paperweight
Charles Kaziun Jr PANSY Paperweight. 2-1/8 diameter & 1-1/4 tall. Signature gold foil “K” embedded on the underside. Charlie (he liked to be called that) was an extremely talented and determined individual. This is the kind of guy you want with you in a submarine thats sitting wedged in the Pacific Mariana Trench with the forward torpedo room flooding. When he saw a technical challenge he seemed to come alive with determination. Here was a rebel artist. Alone in his quest, functioning almost as the TV character MacGyver, with improvised instruments a Chase & Sanborn coffee can as a shop burner and flying blind as he strove to reopen the vault doors to the secrets of the ancients okay, were only talking about a century and a half. Just go with it. But just try and tell him something couldnt be done and watch the sparks fly as he proved you wrong. Seriously, the young artists insatiable imagination and energy allowed him to first re-engineer the content and quality of classic era paperweights before creating his own indelible mixture of designs and executions that today stand out for their beauty and are immediately identifiable. Try leaving your name lying around engraved in gold and see if people dont remember you! But the real reason Charlie Kaziun has retained his stature as an artist and pioneer is the quality and dedication that marked his career of almost six decadesbeginning in 1934 when he was a freshman in high school. Over his career in glass and especially early on, Charlie created vases, ashtrays, pitchers, buttons, salt dishes, pens, candelabra, and more, in addition to paperweights. It would take several more pages to describe how he bribed, cajoled and caressed the glass into the beautiful works he created so just look at the pictures this time around! Charlie gained momentum when he began closely observing the public demonstrations by the renowned Howell family of glassblowers who decided it was easier to hire the kid than to have him arrested for stalking and industrial espionage. By the late 1940s-early 1950s, a network of dealers had placed Kaziuns alongside their antique French and American pieces in their shops and galleries. In 1945 on a summer (working) sojourn to Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratoryand guys being guysCharlie wound up annoying his future wife, Louise, before he even met her. Actually her mom rented Charlie her daughters bedroom while she was at her summer job, and the eighteen year old came home to find herself demoted to the nursery! Remember in life, you only have one chance to make a first impression! They married a quick nine years later. His was a lonely path in many respects. One day Charlie received the biggest compliment a paperweight maker could ever wish for. In the 1940s he had been pretty much alone in the paperweight field, but by 1952-53, Baccarat and Saint Louis had both resumed the production of paperweights. Charlie had once said: With all due respect to the French, I dont think they have the patent on brains and if they had succeeded in reviving an art form of this sort over there, possibly it could be done over here. In 1953, Charlie and Louise attended an antique show in New York City where Paul Jokelson was displaying Kaziun weights next to mostly antiques. Representatives from both Baccarat and Saint Louis were present and after examining Charlies efforts, they begged him on the spot to fly home with them to show the French where they were making all their mistakes! YES, were talking about being PAID to come to PARIS! But our hero declined their offers and continued full speed with his own work and thats lucky for all our personal collections. In his later decades, after so many years filled with experimentation, hard work, exhibitions, success, and recognition various health issues began to physically impair Charlie, and he really focused his future efforts on training his son Charles in the art of glass. It must have been a proud day when he told his son that the younger Kaziuns miniature Christmas ornaments far surpassed any that he had ever made. It was only after Charlies passing in 1992, however that his son Charles began making paperweights. Theres no better way to take our leave of this woefully inadequate description of a truly talented and groundbreaking artist whose work is in every serious collection, than to quote a fragment from the writings of Louise, who, seems at some point to have forgiven Charlie for her unseemly eviction from her own bedroom. When I hold one of his pieces and study it, whats inside seems to glow with life. Thats what is so fascinating to me about paperweights. The forms and the flowers in the glass are the closest thing to eternal life we can know. The item “Charles Kaziun Jr PANSY Paperweight” is in sale since Tuesday, May 7, 2019. Perthshire Paperweight PP22 Scent Bottle with Matching Striated Stopper in a lovely Cobalt Blue Color in Excellent Condition Pre 1982. The bottom of the bottle has a complex concentric millefiori pattern with a vibrant blue color to the base. The clear stopper has delicate cobalt blue strands winding through it to match. It is approximately 4 and 3/4 inches tall. The base is unsigned designating this bottle as made between 1973 and 1982. It has the requisite center cane and four outer rings. What is most interesting is the exact reflection of the base design that can be seen from the side and above, a perfect image to add complexity to the bottle itself. I have tried to show this in my final photo. Magnification is superb for this characteristic. Cane choices for this particular bottle are wonderful in their contrast to the blue base. It is unclear how many of these bottles in varying colors of ruby, blue, or green were actually produced. Vintage Lundberg Studios Limited Edition Paperweight SIgned by Steven Lundberg
Vintage Lundberg Studios Limited Edition Paperweight SIgned by the man himself, Steve Lundberg! This is a lovely early example of a Vintage Lundberg Studios hand blown and decorated paperweight! This lovely paperweight hails from 1975, and was hand crafted by master glass blower Steven Lundberg! It features a lovely hearts and vines decor with beautifully hot decorated flowers with millefiori centers. The paperweight is fully signed with an engraved signature of “Lundberg Studios 1975 SL (Steven Lundberg) 249″. It’s not easy to find a piece actually signed by James or Steven Lundberg, these are getting exceedingly difficult to come by, and a famous artist signed one from the early days of Lundberg Studios is a prize for sure! Measures 3″ wide x 2-1/2″ tall, and is in excellent condition without chips, cracks, repairs, etc. Here’s some background on LUNDBERG STUDIOS: Located in Central Coastal California, Lundberg Studios has been producing quality art glass since 1972. It first became known for its iridescent glass and Art Nouveau style. Later, its clear-encased weights with flower, bird, butterfly, and seascape motifs marked the emergence of a new form of paperweight. The late James Lundberg, founder of the studio, first studied glass while working at California State University at San Jose during the late 1960’s. Classically trained in ceramics from an early age, Lundberg worked his way through college as the assistant to the head of the ceramics department, Dr. Through his association with Dr. Sanders, a noted authority on ceramic glazes, James became fascinated with the chemistry of colored glass. He was later to become an authority on the chemistry of colored glasses and one of a handful of paperweight makers who formulated and melted all of their own materials. A graduate tour took him to Germany, Italy, Spain, France, and England to continue studying glass making techniques. One of the most important lessons that he learned was that very little was being done with colored glasses. On his way home from Europe, he stopped in New York City and was introduced to Tiffany Art Glass. Struck by both the beauty and value of Tiffanys work, he rushed home to develop similar iridescent luster colors. Today Lundberg Studios is one of the foremost replicators of Tiffany Style art glass. In 1972, with the encouragement of L. Selman, Lundberg began applying his iridescent glasses and Tiffany decorative techniques to paperweight design. They were an immediate success and in such demand that a year later he, with college pal Mark Cantor, his younger brother Steven Lundberg and several other friends moved to set up a larger studio. The paperweight department of Lundberg Studios has consistently been staffed by glass artists working in the Renaissance Studio tradition, with each contributing his unique skills to the creative process. Steven Lundberg originally trained as the first apprentice to his brother James. Over the years he has worked in all aspects of glass making at the studio, but for the past decade Steven has concentrated entirely on crystal encasement. David Salazar began as an apprentice to Mark Cantor in 1972. For the next eight years he worked primarily as a decorator of first iridescent, and then crystal encasement paperweights. In 1974, and then again in 1976, Chris Buzzini joined the cooperative and added some very important techniques to the new paperweight style being developed. Daniel Salazar, who began as an assistant to Chris Buzzini and his brother David, early on showed a great flare for design. He has spent the last ten years innovating and producing his own paperweight designs. In 1976 James Shaw, then a potter, joined the studio and began learning the art of cutting and finishing glass. Out of the combined experience and expertise of all the artists, a new type of paperweight began to be produced at Lundberg Studios around 1978. Called the California Paperweight Style (or torch work), it represents a hybridization of two antique styles: the Art Nouveau “ice pick” technique and the lamp working procedures of the French paperweight. It allowed for the direct application of complex three dimensional imagery and enlarged the range of paperweights offered by Lundberg. By 1978 the studio was producing crystal encased weights in the new style on a regular basis. Today Lundberg Studios continues to be a leader in developing new designs and motifs. Examples of their work are included in almost every major museum and private glass collection. The studio houses the talents of several teams of glass artists who work to create the beautiful lustered lamps, vases, scent bottles and paperweights that have steadily become an important area of production. In 1989 James Lundberg developed the Worldweight. This earth paperweight, using a complex powdered glass drawing and several layers of specially formulated glasses represents yet another new style pioneered by Lundberg. The Worldweight has been used by numerous corporations, the President of the United Stales, Jacques Cousteau, and the National Geographic Society as a special award for achievement, and the demand continues for this very unique piece. The Master Craftsman at Lundberg Studios continue to produce the Worldweight, in addition to their other beautiful designs, under the direction of Rebecca Lundberg.
