Glass Millville NJ South Jersey Umbrella Engraved Inkwell Paperweight Circa 1890 Nearly 9 3/4 high with lid A polished pontil Beautifully engraved with the name Annabelle A wonderfully formed umbrella with extremely pleasant multicolored chips of glass. The dominant colors are a striking combination of blues, that stand out amid a variety of the contrasting colors. I’ve only seen other engraved examples at the American Museum of Glass in Millville, NJ. My research has uncovered the fact that Whittall Tatum engraved varying peices for girls that were celebrating their 16th birthdays. This inkwell came out of a 50 year old Gloucester County, New Jersey collection. Another rare aspect is that the bottle in the center portion of the weight has been manipulated into a tapered form. Which is not typical! Being wider at the shoulders and tapering gradually toward the top of the lower weight. Which makes it clearly stand out amongst other inkwell paperweights. For accuracy I mention the minute pinhead sized, shallow nip off the top edge of the bottles lip. It can barely be seen. Also for accuracy, a BB sized slightly rough, but clear spot in the side of the weight. I’ve seen these markings on glass occasionally before and I have concluded that it is either another hot piece in the lehr briefly coming into contact with it or a droplet of water or sweat. It is definitely not a bruise. There is some typical flaking and bruising at the very bottom edges of the ground stopper base which are shown in the pics. They can easily be ground and polished if desired. Personally, I wouldn’t bother. The inner neck of the bottle is also ground and does not reveal the stoppers flakes while inserted. In other words it displays beautifully. This peice has everything going for it! Rarity of engraving, beautiful colors and a highly unusual and pleasing form.
