This paperweight quite possibly includes some of the most complex classic millefiori canes ever made. It is made in three sizes. The G12 is a small weight, nominally 2-1/8 diameter with about 24 canes. The G12A is a medium sized weight, nominally 2-1/2″ diameter with about 32 canes, and the G12B is a large weight, nominally 2-3/4″ diameter with about 38-40 canes. All three originally were made only on mottled pink grounds, however we asked Peter to make some on other color grounds and this one is on Dar Blue. This is the BIG one, a G12B. Peter McDougall, former Perthshire Factory Manager, continued with his innovative designs. This large close pack paperweight from Peter’s PMcD Studio in Crieff Scotland includes complex and detailed millefiori canes that rival–or SURPASS– the most complex canes found in even the best antique weights such as Baccarat, Clichy, and St. I found one complex cane that had more than 35 individual canes as elements–individual CANES, NOT individual RODS. Several others have more than 20 individual cane elements that form the large complex cane. NOBODY ELSE is doing this level of millefiori cane work. There are over 40 individual canes that are set on a dark Blue cushion. The weight is 2-3/4″ in diameter and 1-7/8″ high. Although Peter McDougall closed his studio in early 2012, he continues to make a very few special weights using “borrowed” facilities. This is the “Catherine Weight” Close pack. Peter first made this “Catherine Weight” design in late 2010 and he continued to make these by special order but with a different base for 2011. The 2010 weight had a Blue base color and for 2011 base color was Red. These were full-sized weights at about 3-1/4 in diameter. A very Large Close pack millefiori design featuring over 250 different canes is formed into a cushion set over a Red core. The set-up is done in the style of the antique Baccarat weights with a clear area around each cane that permits the inner core to show.
