This LARGE closepack weight is one example of Peter’s fine craftsmanship. A wide variety of large millefiori canes are formed into a classic Closepack design. A ring of multi-colored canes encircles the closepack design and these outer canes are pulled down and under to form a multi-colored striped basket. The weight is 3-1/4″ in diameter and 2-3/16″ high, and is signed with PMcD in individual canes in the setup. Debbie Tarsitano paperweight measuring 2-3/4 by 1-15/16 inches tall. Not real happy with the pictures as the weight looks much nicer in hand. Southern New Jersey has been called “The Cradle of American Glass” for the same reason that it could be called The Cradle of American Asparagus Farming. There’s a lot of sand in the soil, and sand (silica) is what is melted to make glass. Many of the glass makers migrated to this area from Europe in and around the late 1790s thru the mid 1800s. There were so many in this area at the time, New England Glass, Sandwich, Boston, Gillinder, Pairpoint and Millville just to name a few. Glass factories have been here for over 200 years, but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that someone decided to call attention to it.
