Antique MILLVILLE FOOTED WHITE FLYING EAGLE WITH RED EYE Art Glass Paperweight. I see no damage to this piece and consider this to be in Mint Condition. This is a Highly Rare Work of Art Glass by Michael Kane at Millville Glass. This is a Museum Quality Display Piece and Would be a Great Center Piece in your China Cabinet surrounded by all your other Millville Collection. Michael Kane is the only man known to have created the upright sailboat. His Flying Eagle here is no less impressive. He is believed to have designed some of the most ingenious weights at Millville. In these Frits or Motto weights , the die is cut in a cast-iron mold and the depression is filled with finely ground glass the fuses together and appears frosty when encased in molten crystal. It does have a Fire Polished Pontil Bottom. The measures 3 5/8″ Diameter by 4 1/4″ Tall. The Paperweight by itself weights 2 and a half pounds. Please check pictures for further description. After His passing, his collection was on loan (for approximately 3 years from 2006 to 2009) to the Museum of American Glass (Wheaton Village) in Millville, NJ, which is now known as Wheaton Village Arts and Cultural Center. Gaskills highly regarded and very extensive Art Glass Paperweight Collection was on display in their most prominent area of the Museum at that time. Just prior to being put on display at the Museum, Lawrence Selman of the Renown L. Selman was commissioned to do an appraisal of the entire collection. Selman is known worldwide for his expertise in the field of Art Glass Paperweights and in 2001, Selman was awarded the honor of being named by the Paperweight Collectors Association, one of the Top Ten People of the 20. Century to influence the paperweight art form. Gaskills collection was considered to be one of the largest gatherings of Antique American Art Glass Paperweights known to be in private hands. There’s a lot of sand in the soil, and sand (silica) is what is melted to make glass. Many of the glass makers migrated to this area from Europe in and around the late 1790s thru the mid 1800s. There were so many in this area at the time, New England Glass, Sandwich, Boston, Gillinder, Pairpoint and Millville just to name a few. Glass factories have been here for over 200 years, but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that someone decided to call attention to it. It wasnt easy but I did see a few tiny flea bites and a few very small light scratches. I still consider this to be in Excellent Condition and Highly Rare Work of Art Glass by Michael Kane at Millville Glass. If it were not for the few flea bites and few light scratches I would have rated this weight to be in MINT Condition. This is still a Museum Quality Display Piece and Would be a Great Center Piece in your China Cabinet surrounded by all your other Millville Collection.
