Signed David Huchthausen Milropa Studios Art Glass Paperweight. Dated 1979 and numbered # FWOL5. From a private collection. 4.5″ tall, 4.5″ wide, with 2.5 base. Made at the New York Milropa Studios in the late 1970’s. From an early untitled Floral Series, displaying large spindly lavender flower and blue and white star flowers peering from slender grasses. By David Huchthausen (American), who was the design director at that time. Signed by the artist. David Huchthausen received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; although his early focus was on architecture he also gravitated toward sculpture, and then turned to glass after discovering an abandoned glass furnace on campus. While there he served as a graduate assistant to Harvey Littleton, a glass pioneer who had recently started Americas first hot glass program at the university. He earned a Fulbright Research Scholarship to the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria in 1977 and 1978 (and while there worked with the J&L Lobmeyr Studios), and won a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant. With hundreds of one-man and group exhibitions on his resume, Huchthausen is considered a leader in the field. The Beverly Schindler Collection. The Arrowhead cane is to antique Baccarat weights as the Rose cane is to Clichy weights. This is a very colorful concentric paperweight. A large center Stars cane is set with four spaced rings of millefiori canes in Red, White, and Blue. The inner ring is Red florets, the second ring is White Stardust canes, the third ring is Red and White cog canes, and the outer ring is White stardust canes alternating with Blue/White arrowhead canes. The entire design is encased within clear crystal. The paperweight is 2-9/16″ in diameter and 1-5/8″ high. There are two tiny pits (1/16 or smaller) to the side of the dome and the remains of an old bruise that was partially polished out on the lower side. There are also a few light scratched to the concave base and light wear to the base rim commensurate with the age of the weight. Over all condition id very good to excellent. DESCRIPTION Antique B 1848 Baccarat paperweight with scattered millefiori and gridel canes on an upset muslin ground in as found condition. CONDITION – The condition is as found or as is. There is wear, heavy scratching, and 2 under the surface circular marks to the top surface and chipping/scratching to the sides along the widest point (6 chips, bruises or spots on this widest point/side area that I can put my fingernail into, see photo with dark background).
