Large Peter McDougall millefiori on muslin chequer paperweight : 78 mm / 3 1/16 inch diameter. Rare 4 strand version; signed, label. Description: Superb, rare millefiori on muslin paperweight by the Scottish craftsman Peter McDougall. The detailed compound millefiori canes are set between four coloured strands in a chequer pattern, all on an’upset muslin’ cushion. Most of his chequers have 2 or 3 strands – this is quite unusual (maybe a one-off) in having four strands (blue / turquoise/ gold aventurine / magenta). Concave polished base centred with small’PMCD’ signature cane. Maker’s label on the base. Size : diameter 3 1/16 inch / 78 mm; height 2 1/16 inch / 53 mm. Measuring 27 tall (16 to the base of the socket) the lamps have white trumpet flowers with captured bubbles and accents of cut crystal. The basic theme of the inhabited planet series is that a new planet has been discovered with interesting features inviting exploration. There is a blue ocean swimming around green continents, forest filled mountain ranges and possibly inhabited cities. Interesting, possibly man made, structures require further exploration. There is a blue and white ribbon shaped spaceship on its way to investigate. This is a work of astonishing depth and intricate beauty. Josh Simpson has been making magical glass objects including paperweights for over 40 years. He has long had a fascination with space exploration and is married to Astronaut Cady Coleman. He is a graduate of Hamilton College and has his own glass studio in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts. Lovely floral branches and butterfly in clear glass. Colors change according to the light. Beautiful glimmer glittery silver gold base. Globe perfect, no cracks or scratches. There is a very small fleabite (maybe 1/16) on the bottom below the Lundberg Studio name, see last photo. It was there when I bought it, could just be part of the handblown glass process.
