1845 – 1860 / Antik. DOUBLE CLEMATIS WITH BUD. Die Compagnie des Cristalleries de Baccarat war neben Saint-Louis eine der beiden königlichen, klassischen Kristallerien Frankreichs. Nach dem Versiegen der Paperweight-Produktion Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurden erstmals wieder im Jahre 1957 Millefiori-Paperweights hergestellt. Im Jahre 2002 wurde die Paperweight-Produktion leider entgültig eingestellt. Sie bieten hier auf eine Double Clematis with Bud, hergestellt zwischen ca. 1845 und 1860 in. Der klassischen Periode der antiken Paperweights. Im der Mitte dieses Paperweights ist eine weiße Clematis mit insgesamt 10 weißen, gefurchten Blütenblättern platziert. Statt dem üblichen bulls eye-Cane im Zentrum wurde hier ein sogenanntes arrow head-Cane mit einem 6-point-star verarbeitet. Komplettiert wird das Motiv durch einen geschwungenen Stengel mit 6 grünen Blättern und einer noch halb geschlossenen Blüten-Knospe. Alles umfangen von farblosem, schwerem Glas aus Bleikristall. Boden konkav und feuerpoliert mit schmalem Standring und Sternschliff mit 24 Lanzetten. Ein antikes Sahnestück in nicht aufpoliertem Original-Zustand! 150 Jahre alten Paperweight in gutem Zustand. Early Paul Stankard Compound Meadow Wreath Floral Paperweight. This paperweight features an advanced Meadow Wreath study with two yellow flowers, well defined variegated green leaves, stems, an elaborate root system, seed pod, and the hint of the circle of life. The ground is a wine color with a base color of light blue. It is signed on the base with an early “S” signature cane. This is an amazing early example with many of the features that would later define the best of Paul Stankard’s work. According to Paul Stankard, the Meadow Wreath is a stylized imaginary flower. Most of his examples have a five petal yellow flower, but this piece experimented with a more full bodied many petaled flower. Paul did several studies utilizing this flower as a concept starting about 1972. When I sent Paul pictures of this paperweight, he responded This piece is interesting and predicts elaborate root systems and seed pods. I’m not sure of the date maybe late seventies instead of the mid-eighties. Please Note: The stand shown in the pictures is not included with the paperweight. It is shown for illustration only. Note on white glare : Please ignore the white areas, they are glare from the lights. Paul Joseph Stankard is considered to be the father of modern glass paperweights. He has a degree in Scientific Glassblowing from the Salem Vocational Technical Institute (now Salem Community College) in Salem, New Jersey and worked for ten years as a glassblower making scientific instruments for various chemical laboratories before turning his attention to creating glass art. He made his first paperweights in 1968 focusing on a realistic replication of nature. Today he is one of the premier lampwork artists and has shared his knowledge with many other fine glass artists. Paul’s studio is in Mantua, NJ. His work is on display at over 60 museums worldwide and there are several excellent books on this artist. Medium Size : Just under 2 7/16″ diameter by just under 1 1/2″ tall. The paperweight has a flat profile. The base is ground concave. Signature : Signed signed with a light blue “S” signature cane on the base. This signature cane was in use during the early to mid 1980s, but Paul says the paperweight may date from the late 1970s. This is a beautiful antique Clichy spaced concentric millefiori glass paperweight. It measures 1 7/8″ across, and 1 3/8″ high. Bottom has polished pontil. It dates to the 1850s, and is in great condition with no chips, or cracks, there is 1 small bruise to the side and a few scratches, to be expected, see pics. This piece is fresh to the market from a large private collection which I will be listing over the next few months.
