RARE Caithness MAYDANCE SILVER Paperweight HANDSIGNED by Colin Terris 1986 EC
Also included is its certificate of authenticity and its modern design presentation box! What is most unique is that the central bubble surrounded by the maypole totally reflects the maypole itself in its glass. Please check my 2nd photo which shows a closeup of this optical illusion! From my own personal collection!! MAY DANCE SILVER (although it is actually blue in color). The silver is because of the glistening silver white color of the base upon which the maypole rests. This weight was handpicked by me during a 1986 visit to the Caithness factory in. Scotland, for both its lovely color and its glass clarity. I was a young teacher traveling there to study English and Scottish literature, and I spent much of my time touring the unique paperweight factories of Scotland, Caithness, Selkirk, and Perthshire. This paperweight was one of the first that I collected, and more modern weights followed. At that time, I made the acquaintance of COLIN TERRIS, the founding director and innovator of Caithness Glass. He was given recognition by Queen Elizabeth as a member of the order of the British Empire for his importance to the glass making industry, and is responsible for modern glass design as we know it today. In fact, he is referred to as the’father of modern paperweight design’. Terris hand signed my paperweight with his name by etching his signature in the glass base as the photos show. This greatly adds to the unique value of this particular weight, which is one of the earlier designs that the company produced, and was in fact, an original design by Mr. Terris many times over the years until his death, and I have other pieces signed by him as well as a 1/1 piece that he himself designed and made for me. Caithness introduced modern glass design to the world, and this weight is a very early example of their development of this process. Caithness Scotland D26037 with the additional hand etched signature Colin Terris 1986. It is in excellent condition, and will come with its modern cardboard presentation box and its COA..
